Scalable Relations is a series of networked exhibitions that present media artworks by faculty of the UC Digital Arts Research Network (DARnet) across UC campuses from January 9 throughout March, 2009. The exhibition, curated by Christiane Paul (Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art), takes place at the BEALL Center for Art + Technology at UC Irvine; the gallery@CalIT2 at UCSD; California NanoSystems Institute CN(S)I at UCLA; as well as Media Arts and Technology (MAT) at UCSB. Scalable Relations brings together works that explore digital media's capability of representing a growing amount of data in constantly evolving relations. Addressing a range of issues, the projects in Scalable Relations illustrate the complexities and shifting contexts of today's information society.

One of the distinctive features of the digital medium is its capacity to establish relations between large quantities of data through filtering and processing according to different criteria. These constantly evolving, scalable relations affect both the production of meaning and a traditional understanding of aesthetics, which become subject to computational logic—the instructions given by algorithms—and a constant reconfiguration of contexts. The format of the exhibition itself, in its distribution across multiple venues, mirrors the relational theme of the exhibition and the inherent connectivity of the digital medium.

The projects presented within Scalable Relations address different themes, distributed across the exhibition spaces. The six works featured at the Beall Center explore patterns, complexity, and generative algorithmic process with regard to nature, organic processes, and urban development, as well as representations of online communication and sharing. UCSD's gallery@CalIT2 exhibits three pieces that use the framework of computer gaming for exploring social and belief systems and expand the usually confined simulated world of a game to the 'real world.' The three projects in the exhibition either use paradigms of gaming and play for understanding phenomena and concepts that shape the physical world, or incorporate real world concepts that one would seldom encounter within a commercial game. The grouping of works at the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UCLA examines issues surrounding science, ethics, public health and social conditions. Taking various forms, ranging from sound installation to new media documentary, the projects in this category deal with the social and political implications of science or the impact of poverty, alienation, and addiction. The satellite exhibition at UCSB addresses complex behaviors and transmodalities, featuring three pieces that, respectively, investigate sensing and perception, the geometries of the invisible connections in our lives and our environment, and the multi-scale, multi-modal experience of revealing internal structures within genomics data.

Together, the works in the networked exhibition provide a sketch of the multiple forms and themes existing within the field of new media art and illustrate the relational qualities of the digital medium.
"As the "Art" World Turns"

"As the "Art" World Turns" -- as we knew it for the past 15 years -- unravels in the midst of world-wide recessions and economic crises, the question of who/what will survive and how have become prevalent in discussions amongst art critics, art fair attendees, dealers, art students, museum goers, gallery visitors, collectors, curators, and, of course, artists themselves. However, it is also a chance (especially) for the latter to imagine, implement and defend new parameters for art production and circulation. The question is what should these models look like, what direction should they take, and how would they fit into the world at large?

The artist group ArtistsMeeting (AM) plans to publish an edited sampling of theories, proposals and opinions, as well as diagrams, graphics and images in hope to jumpstart a fresh critical debate. Therefore, we call for image and text contributions from across the
current "art world".

Please e-mail your responses to: artistsmeeting@yahoo.com

Architecture is a candid reflection of mankind’s self-image. The ways in which we redesign our immediate environs can be seen as a representation of how we wish to be viewed by others. We tear down and build up repeatedly, making improvements to feel better, safer, more secure; to belong or stand apart. While the individual artists in “Plan B” vary widely in media and approach, their work uncovers common fears and concerns. Faced with an increasingly chaotic outside world, they react by building walls, physical and psychic, to retain a measure of control. However, buried in this perpetual process of remodeling is a substratum of hope and a utopic determination to re-invent self and surroundings.
Like the Spice is pleased to present Jenny Morgan: Abrasions, a selection of the artist’s recent figurative oil paintings, the artist’s first solo show at Like the Spice and in New York.

In her tensely psychological portraits, all depicting people close to the artist, Jenny Morgan scrapes and sands away the top layers of paint creating wounds that are at once repellant, humanizing and technically masterful. Like drilling down to the molten core of the subjects’ anatomy, the areas that are worn away mark the paintings as more than portraits but also as bodily stand ins, as though if you disturb them, the wounds may open up and start bleeding. It is left to the viewer whether it will be blood or red paint that will flow.

Presented on stark monochromatic grounds, the figures’ presence confronts the viewer with a shocking dose of intimacy. From ten feet the figures seem powerful, statuesque and attractive. From five feet you begin noticing what seem like scrapes and rashes – compelling you to draw nearer. Up close you realize the full technical prowess of Morgan, who not only renders uncanny likenesses and emotionally complex portraits but lays the under-layers so that the “finished” painting can be sanded and carved revealing the blood and guts of both the subjects and the painting itself. Tiny pinpricks of gesso peek through where the wounds are deepest, creating a fascinating marriage of image and physical structure; the canvas’ texture becomes a pointillist itch you can’t scratch.

Jenny Morgan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1982. In 2003 Morgan was Valedictorian of her graduating class at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Colorado were she attained a BFA. Jenny then went on to finish her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2008. She has exhibited nationwide in solo shows at the Plus Gallery and the Pirate Gallery in Denver, Colorado and has participated in group shows at Columbia University, The LeRoy Neiman Gallery, Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery, and multiple galleries in Colorado, Florida and New York City. Morgan has been added to many public and private collections across the states including The Museum of Fine Arts Key West, Florida. Like the Spice has recently featured her work at Scope Art Fair, Miami and Bridge Art Fair, Miami Beach as well as in “It’s a Small World” a group show at the gallery. Morgan has appeared in numerous publications including The Denver Post, The Rocky Mountain News, New American Paintings and Westword. Jenny Morgan currently lives and works in NYC.

The 5th edition of the Mapping Festival is coming!
The dates are set! From May 8th through the 17th 2009 the Mapping Festival in Geneva, Switzerland will retain its focus on VJing by highlighting one of its most progressive forms: taking projection out of enclosed walls and out on to the street.
Facade mapping, travelling, interactive and audiovisual projections. We are counting on you to give life to the streets and buildings of Geneva!
Alongside this added focus we are open to proposals for lectures, workshops, audio visual performances, installations and clubbing nights that have punctuated the Mapping in its preceding years.
Beware the delays to apply are short: you can send us your applications until January 26th, 2009 (letter must be postmarked by that date).
You can download the application form here: http://www.mappingfestival.com/mapping2009/inscriptions
Digital poetry from 1987 by Geof Huth

ENDEMIC BATTLE COLLAGE AND
OTHER 1987 APPLE BASIC POEMS
by Geof Huth
http://vispo.com/huth

Endemic Battle Collage and other 1987 Apple Basic Poems is a suite of
programmed, animated poems by Geof Huth. This work is discussed in Chris
Funkhouser's landmark book Prehistoric Digital Poetry. Because this early
Huth work is digital and from 1987, it's been unavailable for many years.
You can view the work as video at http://vispo.com/huth or download an
emulator and view the poems through the emulator. Also included on vispo.com
are writings by Geof Huth about these works and about digital poetry more
generally. And an introduction by me to the project.

This is some of the earliest programmed+kinetic visual poetry created. This
Huth work and bpNichol's related First Screening at http://vispo.com/bp
exude the sense of excitement Nichol and Huth felt at this incunabular point
in the intersection of visual and digital poetry with the cinematic.

Happy new year to all Rhizomers!
PEN CALL ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO Second Edition - PRIZE 15.000€ // CONCURSO DE IDEAS ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO Segunda Edición - PREMIO 15.000€

Competition ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO: the art of exhibiting art online
Second edition

Open call for proposals by VOCENTO in collaboration with ARCOmadrid 2009 International Contemporary Art Fair, Madrid.

VOCENTO and ARCOmadrid announce a competition of ideas to provide art galleries with web solutions responding to the concept of Web 2.0, and to provide opportunities to enhance their online presence and networking potential.

Total award is 15.000 euros.

Description

VOCENTO and ARCOmadrid invite proposals for innovative and experimental online platforms and effective web tools to foster and stimulate the presence, exhibition, communication and management of art on the Internet. The selected proposal will be awarded with a production budget of 15,000 euros (taxes included) to realize the project.

The competition wishes to encourage research in the field of social technologies and artistic practice, and more specifically to identify current needs and provide suitable solutions for art galleries in the context of the Internet. The solutions will notably benefit communication between art and society.

The proposal, a complete web concept, or environment, or tool, will be an application to be implemented by art galleries.

The winning proposal will be selected by an international Jury, made up of two experts in the field of art and technology: Joasia Krysa (KURATOR/UoP, UK), Robert Lisek, (winner of the 2008 edition with the project NEST) and a representative of VOCENTO (Spain). LaAgencia will act as coordinator of the award and jury secretary.

- Production of the award-winning proposal has to be completed in a maximum period of nine months. Once produced, a complete web concept, or environment, or tool, will be freely distributed for implementation by the participant galleries at ARCOmadrid´s 2009 edition and the galleries participating at ARCOmadrid´s 2010 edition.

- Notification of the winner date: 13th of February 2009.

- The Award prize of the winning proposal will receive a total of 15.000 euros budget (taxes included).

Conditions for entry to participate:

- The competition ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO is open to any individual or group, of any nationality or legal entity. It is an open and international award contest.

- The proposal must be submitted through an online application form available on the dedicated ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO’s website at http://www.vocento.com/en/concurso_ideas_arte2_vocento.php. Proposals sent by e-mail, post or any other way will not be accepted.

- Each individual or group is allowed to submit only one proposal. In case of the submission of more than one proposal, only the first proposal will be considered.

- Applications for the ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO competition can be submitted in English or Spanish. We highly recommend submitting bilingual versions of the proposal.

- The participating proposals must be for projects realizable for the value of the prize money, i.e. €15,000 (including taxes), within a maximum production period of nine months from the date of the Jury’s decision.

- The Jury reserves the right to accept or reject any of the projects, and its decision is final.

- Accepting the prize implies the transfer of property rights of the awarded project to VOCENTO, after the termination of its free distribution among art galleries participating at ARCOmadrid 2009 and those taking part in the 2010 edition. VOCENTO agrees not to commercialize nor distribute it in any other form than that described. After two years VOCENTO may make the project available to the public under the license CreativeCommons, Attribution 2.5 Spain.

ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO competition aims not only to enable the development of a powerful tool or web environment serving art, but also to promote the development of a creative, striking and original environment appropriate to its target, ART, which can express the sensibility of both creators and a dynamic public eager for creative environments.
